Sweet smile, familiar
A memory, distant
So fleeting like another
Lifetime
Perhaps two locked eyes,
Acknowledgement
Of existence,
Now the lack of
Existence
Stirs
Strange nausea.
Gone is
A relative term,
Yet gone
Never fails to make
Someone cry.
You are never
Gone
Completely,
Still the pain
Furrows deep into
Untouched territory.
The shattered glass
Cuts vulnerability
Until it bleeds,
But your skin
Will never bleed again.
Your youth is
Immortalized,
Your time is
Frozen
On the brink
Of an end, and
A beginning.
And your existence is now
Shared among
Those left behind,
Who cup it in their hands,
Gently,
Lovingly,
Never to let go.

A friend of mine passed away this year at twenty-two and he’s been in pretty much all of my poetry ever since. That second stanza was exactly how I still feel.
